Looks like an engine out job, the block has a 4 thou gap between two of the bores so it needs machined, it won't be out to play this year!

Thats a pity Fraser and must be so disappointing. At least you are getting to the source of the problem.

Hi Fraser, if you machine 0.004/5 off the block face
you may need to have the pistons topped as well.
Might be worth investigating copper head gaskets.
Google copper head gaskets for info(Atlas?)
Have known these to work on similar problems
Made in sandwich form/copper outer with compressible filling.
Good luck,cheers,JD.

Hello JD good point I will have to check that with the machine shop. Do you think a copper gasket would take up the 4 thou?

Hi Fraser, there is a good possibility - worth checking/trying before
getting into pulling engines out & paying machine shop time.
Back in the day all our gaskets were thin copper each side of a filler,at that
time it was asbestos, but now the filler is non asbestos. We never had
head gasket problems as long as they were correctly tightened. They are
much more compressible than the modern gaskets which rely on two perfectly
flat surfaces, all the best,JD.

Hi, Guys.

Sorry to hear about the car, Fraser.

I have measured a new copper head gasket for my Zephyr and it is 0.8 of an inch thick. Since I am considerably thicker when it comes to mathematics, I consulted Google and it says that that is equivalent to 800 thou.

Hope this helps and that perhaps the mechanical elfs take a day off from the shoemakers place and give you a hand.
Cheers, Bernie.

Hello Bernie,

Thanks for that, I think I might try a new gasket and some Wellseal and see what happens, if it fails then I know it is an engine out job.

How are things in Canada, I cannot believe that it is nearly a year since we were over, time is flying just now.

Hope all is well with you and your cars

Regards, Fraser.
